2 Sisters Food Group is one of Britain’s most compelling Food & Drink Manufacturing success stories of the past 20 years, having become one of the leading food manufacturers in Europe. Producing around one third of all poultry eaten in the UK, 2 Sisters process an astonishing nine million birds per week for the UK and European market.

The West Bromwich born business began life in 1993 where it turned over a modest £6million, with the business reaching highs of over £3billion in recent years. Since then 2 Sisters Food Group has seen astronomical growth with numerous site openings and business acquisitions, both within the UK and Europe, leading to the manufacturer gaining a huge foothold in the market and becoming an unstoppable force in the poultry industry.

With a testing time and fragile market conditions, there is a positive upturn in sales predicted, although low breast meat prices mean continued challenges for the industry to overcome.

The Brief

During 2018, the site faced a number of significant issues that were deemed a threat to the wider brand and business. The decision was made to bring in a Site Director who could guide the site through a period of considerable change.

As the most challenging of the 2 Sisters sites, Site D was in urgent need of dramatic cultural change following a raft of issues that had arisen. These issues centred around Health & Safety, Technical and Ethical factors that had an impact on the site’s production standards.

This recruitment was an immediate need due to the 2 Sisters Food Group making Site D the flagship for the new Quality Control Standards implementation.

The Circle Select Solution

On a quick turnaround, Circle Select were employed to work with both the Divisional Operations Director and a 2 Sisters Board Director, and Boparan family member, to better understand the skillset and previous achievements that the right individual would require.

We would need to undertake an in-depth character assessment in order to evaluate how an individual would cope in a very challenging environment.

Once the candidate had been found, the process continued with 2 interviews; the first being with the Divisional Operations Director and the second being with the Board Director. This entire process only took 2 weeks, with time an important factor in kickstarting change to help the site head in the right direction as soon as possible.

The Result

The placement of the new Site Director had an immediate impact, galvanising all on-site teams to pull together towards one common goal with a complete cultural shift.

Testament to this change were the overall standard improvements, which gained a green PIU with Tesco, a AA+ BRC rating, and the drastic improvement from Bronze to Outstanding in the M&S Integrity audit.
